Describe the different Trends in the Games Industry:
Financial Trends:
What is a Financial Trend when we are referring to the Games Industry? Well, a Financial Trend in the Games Industry is simply how a company or developer tries to make money to build a game or earn money for a game they already have, so if a developer releases a game, how will that game essentially make profit. There are many trends in the Games Industry that are related to it financially, for example; Stocks & Shares and Kickstarter. Topics that also can be referenced to as Financial Trends that are in other categories are; Re-Mastered Games, DLC, Indie Games and Mergers & Acquisitions. All of which have positives and negatives which will be talked about in more detail.
Stocks & Shares: This is when a Hostile Takeover takes place, the dictionary definition for this is, "A hostile takeover is the acquisition of one company (called the target company) by another (called the acquirer) that is accomplished by going directly to the company's shareholders or fighting to replace management to get the acquisition approved". Associating this with the Games Industry is basically when a company sells over 50% of their shares, this is what leads to a Hostile Takeover - this simply means the original owner no longer owns the majority of the shares as they have sold over 50% to other people, then somebody else could buy the shares from people, so a company owns more than the original owner. If the original owner wants to make a certain game, they are outnumbered and do not have enough support to make the game, so they have no other choice but to sell the rest of the shares to the person trying to takeover the company. What is important to mention is that the original company can merge with the people who have the other shares to make one company and this way there will be no takeover however if the company does not want to conjoin with another one then the ones 'taking over' have no other choice but to start a Hostile Takeover. An example of this happening in real life is; Ubisoft, they have made the mistake of selling their shares over the 50% limit meaning they are now under threat from people trying to merge and takeover, the company attempting to do so is the French telecom giant Vivendi.
Kickstarter: Is a method that Indie Developers and small companies use to generate money, this money is then what is used to actually make a game. Typically, people who donate money to the developers on Kickstarter receive benefits, such as; Early Access, Game Add-Ons etc. Essentially it is a thank you to the people who have donated to the developers to make the game, showing their appreciation to those that gave up their own hard-earned money. There are many benefits to using Kickstarter, for example; the benefits range from, if you back somebody, you are not charged what you donated unless the target donation goal is reached, meaning you will be refunded what you initially paid, 44% of all creators enjoy full project funding which shows how extremely positive and promising it is to use Kickstarter, the initial review process is valuable, so this basically means that the Kickstarter staff review your project submissions and help you modify them before submitting to ensure that the best quality is reached, the project creators have 100% ownership of their work which allows for creative pursuits moving forward and also it has an intuitive, visually-appealing interface so it is easy to navigate throughout the site making the whole experience better. However the cons of using Kickstarter include; it is hard to get publicity for your project - not likely that a lot of people will see your project to actually back it, the 5% site fee, 3-5% payment processing fee, and required backer rewards can eat into margins, especially for non-profits and smaller businesses. The cost of distributing rewards to backers can also present logistical problems. The all-or-nothing funding model introduces uncertainty - until the end of the campaign, nobody knows if the goal will be reached meaning it can prevent opportunities moving forward. Projects have been found to be scams or simply lack creative value. In these cases, investors become upset and the general public gets a sour taste in its mouth regarding Kickstarter - leaving people thinking that backing projects on Kickstarter are a waste of time. An example of a game a game that was funded by Kickstarter is 'Star Citizen', that game had a target goal of $500,000 dollars to be donated and they (Cloud Imperium Games Corporation) were funded $2,134,374 which is an excessive amount of money - this crazy amount of money means that they can now make an even better game with the better funding total.
Industry Trends:
Trends in the industry simply mean new things being released and introduced to the world, for example; Motion Control, this is a slightly newer topic that has not been around for long and so it is how these sort of breakthroughs revolutionise the industry for the better, as these sort of things are what will shape and mold the games we play in 10 years time.

Crunch Time: Crunch Time, "A period when pressure to succeed is great, often toward the end of an undertaking. For example, It's crunch time - we only have two more days to finish. This term employs crunch in the sense of “a critical situation or test", in the Industry is something that developers and companies are trying to eradicate desperately as they realised how bad it is. There are many ways we can look at Crunch Time and think, "that's great" - this is because it makes sure the games are fully finished, that there are no outlying problems that need to be finished and ultimately that the game is just as good as it can possibly be however it is becoming a major issue for the current games that are being made in the Games Industry as games are becoming bigger and better everyday. This being said, it means the Crunch Time period at a Games Company will be longer and harder than before meaning employees are staying at their desk for much longer hours, some cases even sleeping at their desk just so they can get their hours done - this is by no means acceptable and why companies such as Valve have decided to put an end to Crunch Time. It is extremely important that people have the time to see their children, wife, family, friends etc. So Crunch Time is no excuse to remove that right from anybody. As the article shows from 'The Guardian', Crunch Time is no laughing matter and needs to be stopped immediately, the more Games Companies that do it, the better. It is also important to mention that Crunch Time is not paid for, so people missing their families etc. do not even get paid for working those hours.
Crafting Mechanics: Basically Crafting Mechanics are a type of function in a game that are typically apparent in survival based games in which you need to make your own weapons, house, armour and tools etc. These type of mechanics are becoming much more popular in games today as it really tests the players skill. Games such as Minecraft are what really started off the whole craze about Crafting Mechanics, what I mean by this is games like H1Z1, ARK Survival etc. All of which are great games and it is partially because the main style of the game is going from 'Rags to Riches' as you go from wooden tools and a mud hut in Minecraft for example, to diamond mansions with gold ceilings. These games are very popular because of how simple they are but entertaining and indulging however, what is bad about these games is that they are all very similar but the skins or models of the characters are different, so ARK is very similar to Minecraft but instead of having dragons you have Creepers and Spiders, one is more of a cartoon style whereas one has gone for a more realistic approach, soon the games will become dried up as there is not enough versatility and diversity in the game to make it fun to play for much longer. For the moment however, the vast majority of the games are doing great and are grossing quite highly in the charts, it is just a matter of how long those games can actually stay on their perch.

Market Trends:
A market trend is a perceived tendency of financial markets to move in a particular direction over time. These trends are classified as secular for long time frames, primary for medium time frames, and secondary for short time frames. Traders attempt to identify market trends using technical analysis, a framework which characterizes market trends as predictable price tendencies within the market when price reaches support and resistance levels, varying over time. A trend can only be determined in hindsight, since at any time prices in the future are not known.
Selling to China: The market in China is forever growing, because of mass amount of people that live and play games there it is quite easy to see why developers try to market and publish games there, when the games are being made it is important to make sure that the games have some aspect of China in their as this will boost sales and make the game so much more popular, an easy example of this is that you can have all Chinese scientists to make it look like the Chinese are really good and helping. On the other hand however, China is one of the countries that are quick to shutdown games from being sold there, if your game goes against something they believe in then the game can be terminated quickly, for example; if you were to have Chinese people being put in a bad light or killed for instance then the game will immediately be stopped from being sold in China. This is why it is key to have positive Chinese parts in your game as it can boost sales astonishingly with the incredibly large population in the game. Examples of games that are not allowed to be sold in China are Battlefield 4, "Banned due to the discrediting of China's national image as well as a threat to national security, in which the Chinese Ministry claims that the game shows it a "cultural invasion", Command & Conquer Generals, "Banned for "smearing the image of China and the Chinese army" although the game presents China as a quasi-protagonist, as well as glorifying the People's Liberation Army. Additionally, the China campaign has the player destroy questionable targets such as the Three Gorges Dam and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in order to snuff out an invading terrorist organization", Football Manager 2005, "Banned for recognizing Taiwan and Tibet as independent countries. An edited version was later released globally", Hearts of Iron, "Banned for portraying Tibet, Sinkiang, and Manchuria as independent countries and Taiwan as under Japanese control", I.G.I.-2: Covert Strike, "Banned because of "intentionally blackening China and the Chinese army's image" and many other games.
Digital Distribution: "Digital distribution (also called content delivery, online distribution, or electronic software distribution (ESD), among others) is the delivery or distribution of media content such as audio, video, software and video games. The term is generally used to describe distribution over an online delivery medium, such as the Internet, thus bypassing physical distribution methods, such as paper, compact discs, and VHS videocassettes. The term online distribution is typically applied to freestanding products; downloadable add-ons for other products are more commonly known as downloadable content. With the advancement of network bandwidth capabilities, online distribution became prominent in the 21st century". This trend is increasing rapidly with the amount of places that we can buy games from digitally, places such as Steam, G2A, Origin and many more mean that games can be sold instantly and you do not need to care about shipping costs etc. They are also very popular because, with Steam for example; you have an account that you can buy games on, with the account you can take it anywhere and play your games on any PC without actually having to have the hard disc this means that transport of games is no longer an issue and saves up so much more space compared to how it used to be a few years back. However, like everything digital, if you forget the password etc. to the account then all of the money that you have spent becomes useless as you have no way of playing and accessing the games you have paid money for. This is why some people like to have hard copies as they know that way, there is no way that they will lose the games.

Finance and Industry Trends:
Indie Games: The games made by Independent Developers in theory are much more inferior to those made by larger companies such as; Rockstar, Activision etc. This is because the budget that they have is much smaller than theirs meaning they do not have as much money to play around with. Because of the smaller budget, it means that goals are stuck to much more adamantly and things are not twisted or experimented with as such. So if the goal is to make a sky blue with planes flying in the sky, the developers then will not see what it looks like with a pink sky and flying dragons, everything is stuck to to make sure the budget is followed. This being said, having a smaller team means that it is easier to work together as everyone is in the same place, so any problems that may occur, the person you need to talk to is only a couple of seats away - allowing for more productive and cohesive work. However, as previously mentioned, if an Indie Dev wanted to make a high end game, then there is not a good chance they will be able to produce something of good quality as they do not have the time and or resources to do so. Indie Games however despite being produced with not as good sounds, graphics, environments etc. can still be much better to play compared to some high end games that a lot of money was pumped into. Look at Minecraft for example; that was originally an Indie Dev built game and that turned out to be one of the top grossing games played. "An independent video game (commonly referred to as an indie game) is a video game that is created without the financial support of a publisher. Indie games often focus on innovation and rely on digital distribution. Indie gaming saw a rise in the latter half of the 2000s, primarily due to new online distribution methods and development tools. Some indie games have been very successful financially, such as Braid, World of Goo, Flow, and Minecraft", this shows how the money has not a lot of effect sometimes as Indie made games can be just as successful and popular as some other larger games.
Mergers & Acquisitions: "Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are transactions in which the ownership of companies, other business organisations or their operating units are transferred or combined. As an aspect of strategic management, M&A can allow enterprises to grow, shrink, change the nature of their business or improve their competitive position". With Mergers & Acquisitions, this is simply that when two companies merge together they have more money, with that increased amount of money, they are more inclined to make a better game as they have a higher budget to use and spend from. They can buy better equipment, software etc. This will then mean they can produce a better game in theory, however we have seen that money does not make the best games as look at No Man's Sky, that had a lot of money invested into it and it was one of the biggest game flops in the Games Industry, over hyped and it did not live up to its name. Having two companies come together can be great however it can also be very bad as there may be two different mindsets at the table, everybody will have their own idea and way they want to do something so if somebody they do not know comes a long and shuts them down immediately, they will not take it too kindly. What is a Financial Trend when we are referring to the Games Industry? Well, a Financial Trend in the Games Industry is simply how a company or developer tries to make money to build a game or earn money for a game they already have, so if a developer releases a game, how will that game essentially make profit. Re-Mastered Games: They are generally made because they bring in easy revenue, the games takes very little time to change and make better meaning it is quick money that can be used to make more games. The games that are remastered are very often games that the public request or games that sold very well when they were previously released on their parent consoles. A great example of this is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This game has been remastered and released with Infinite Warfare - the new Call of Duty in the ever expanding Call of Duty series. When Call of Duty 4 was first released, it was a very iconic game - this is exactly why it has been remastered as it is guaranteed that it will sell copies, because of this, it means it is a 'no brainer' that Infinity Ward decided to remaster it. It also fits that Call of Duty 4 has been remastered as it offers a direct alternative to the futuristic style of Infinite Warfare. meaning there will be less chance that people will become bored of either game easily. Remastering games is one of the best and quickest ways to make money as it means that you can listen to the fans and what they want but also make quick money for your company - it is a win-win for everybody involved. Positives to come from remastering games is the fact that people get to play their old favourite games again but in much better detail and playability etc. however some people argue that it is just the same game and nothing has changed so there is no point spending so much money when you can play the original as it is the same game after all.
DLC: Downloadable Content or DLC, "Downloadable content (DLC) is additional content created for a released video game. It is distributed through the Internet by the game's official publisher. Downloadable content can be of several types, ranging from aesthetic outfit changes to a new, extensive storyline, similar to an expansion pack. As such, DLC may add new game modes, objects, levels, challenges or other features to a complete, already released game", this is what most games today have as an option in their games today as they not only bring diversity to the game but also bring in money too - similar to Remastering games in a sense, it is an easy way to make more money just by adding more or different features to a game. With this situation we will use Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 as an example, this is because there are good and bad points to make about this game. In Black Ops 3, they had supply drops, these Supply Drops were bad examples of DLC as the drop rates of actually getting something in those Supply Drops was very small, however the Supply Drops brought new weapons to the game, weapons that 'spiced' up the gameplay and made the game last much longer in duration than it would have done if there were no Supply Drops. Another big point to mention about DLC that has been an up and coming thing is what we actually receive as DLC, some people think that companies such as Activision release the game unfinished and the DLC is what finishes the game, where as some think that they take parts out of the game and re-release them as DLC to make more money, this money can then be used to make more games etc. or even make more DLC but ultimately DLC has changed compared to what it used to be like as now it is more based on making additional money whereas its main focus was to bring more creativity and originality to the game - completely different to most games we see today.Trends in the industry simply mean new things being released and introduced to the world, for example; Motion Control, this is a slightly newer topic that has not been around for long and so it is how these sort of breakthroughs revolutionise the industry for the better, as these sort of things are what will shape and mold the games we play in 10 years time. Traders attempt to identify market trends using technical analysis, a framework which characterizes market trends as predictable price tendencies within the market when price reaches support and resistance levels, varying over time. A trend can only be determined in hindsight, since at any time prices in the future are not known.

Virtual Reality: One of the most revolutionary things to happen to the Games Industry, Virtual Reality. But what actually is it? Well, "Virtual Reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Unlike traditional user interfaces, VR places the user inside an experience. Instead of viewing a screen in front of them, users are immersed and able to interact with 3D worlds. By simulating as many senses as possible, such as vision, hearing, touch, even smell, the computer is transformed into a gatekeeper to this artificial world. The only limits to near-real VR experiences are the availability of content and cheap computing power". It has become such a big thing in the gaming community as it has been tried by many different companies, soon it will be a normal thing that pretty much everyone who owns some form of console will have in their setup. However, for the meantime, it is very limited as to how many people actually have them. Like previously mentioned, more people/companies/developers are making their own version of VR, for example; Sony have recently released their VR system, there is the Oculus Rift that has been around for quite some time now and also the HTC Vive, all of which are huge contenders as to who can be the leading force for VR. But what are the main things to talk about when it comes to VR, well positively, it brings new experiences - it is the latest advancement in the way we play games so not many people have tried this form of gaming, it opens up opportunities for people to make more VR games so more people can try it out. However, negatively, it is still a very new project that may not last long, we have seen it before with many things not lasting when they were deemed the next big thing, also as they are still fairly new, the prices for these devices are still extremely high, so getting your hands on these devices is still very hard if you have not got cash to spare.
Motion Control: Like Virtual Reality, it is a new project that is still in its early stages of life. "A motion gaming system, sometimes called a motion-controlled gaming system, is one that allows players to interact with the system through body movements. Input is usually through a combination of spoken commands, natural real-world actions and gesture recognition". We have seen several motion control systems in the past, a huge one which was one of if not the first motion control system, the Wii made by Nintendo. This was remarkable, like nothing ever seen before. People were amazed by how new this technology was and spiraled into something truly amazing. This is when Xbox introduced their Kinect, PlayStation also had their EyeToy and many other systems. Motion Control along with Virtual Reality have the potential to be a really big player in the Games Industry, they just need to play their cards right as something still in its early stages can be really detrimental. The positives and negatives of Motion Control, what are they? Well, to begin with the positives of Motion Control it allows players to have a new way to play games, meaning more fun for everyone as it is not limited, the possibilities are endless however, what about the price, to buy a new Wii console you will need to spend more money just to experience Motion Control and not everybody has the money to spend carelessly on a new console, also there are not as many games out at the minute that use Motion Control compared to the regular market of games which means that you may be stuck for choice when trying to find a new game to play however as it is still in its early stages that can be expected as good things do not happen overnight, everything takes time and patience so it is a waiting game partially, for new and improved systems, games to be introduced to the gaming scene.
Movie Licensing: This is basically when a company gives the rights for somebody to make a movie about their game, this has been done on many occasions and is great publicity for the game, usually very big companies in the movie industry will talk with the people that made the game and will ask if it is OK to make a movie based on their game, 9 times out of 10 the developers will say yes as it can increase game sales. An example of this happening in real life is with Assassins Creed, "Assassin's Creed is an upcoming action adventure film based on the video game franchise of the same name The film is directed by Justin Kurzel, written by Michael Lesslie, Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, and stars Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Michael K. Williams.", a movie is being made about that game which not only will make for a really good movie but will also increase game sales. A very big point to mention however is that if the movie turns out to be really bad, this can have a negative impact on how people will feel about the game and therefore people will begin to either not buy the game or even stop playing it if it is to the extreme dislike of the movie, that should not happen however if the movie that has been produced it to a really high standard. With the example of Assassin's Creed, all of which are great actors so the film will be great meaning more of the game will be sold.
